Garden Window Replacement

A garden window projects out from the wall with glass on three sides and a shelf across the bottom — effectively a small greenhouse over your sink. Herbs, seedlings, or just considerably more light into the darkest part of most kitchens.

They suit north-facing kitchens where nothing will grow otherwise, older homes with a small window over the sink, and anyone who wants a bit more light without structural work.

What a garden window gives you

• Light from three sides instead of one, which changes a dark kitchen more than a bigger flat window would.
• A usable shelf at counter height, deep enough for pots.
• Ventilation — the side panels usually open, which is useful directly over a sink.
• No structural work in most cases. It replaces a standard opening and projects outward.

Things worth knowing

Because it projects out from the house, we check clearances first — what is below it outside, how close the path or drive runs, and whether anything overhangs it.

More glass surface also means more heat transfer than a flat window of the same opening, so the glass package matters more here than it does elsewhere. We spec accordingly rather than fitting the standard unit and hoping.

Garden windows, skywalls and bays

These get confused with each other. A garden window is a small box projecting from one opening. A skywall is glass across most of a wall. A bay window projects out like a garden window but is room-sized and usually structural. If you are not sure which you are picturing, describe the room and we will tell you.

Do plants really grow in them?

With glass on three sides, yes — considerably better than a flat window. South or west facing does best.

Do they lose heat?

More surface area means more heat transfer, so the glass specification matters more here than on a flat window. Specced properly it is not a problem.

Can any window become a garden window?

Most standard openings, yes. It projects outward, so we check clearances and what sits below before committing.

Can you fit one over a sink with a tap in the way?

Usually. The shelf sits at the level of the existing sill, so the tap clears it in most kitchens. We check on the visit.
