What is a skywall?

A skywall is a glazed wall carried up into sloped overhead glass, so the glazing continues from the wall into the roof plane. It is what people usually mean when they describe wanting “a wall of glass” onto a view or a garden. It is a bigger structural proposition than a window, because the overhead glass has to be supported, drained and flashed, and the glass itself has to be specified for an overhead application.

Is a skywall the same as a sunroom?

No, and the difference matters when you are pricing. A sunroom is a room added onto the house, with its own floor, walls and roof, built out into the garden. A skywall replaces glazing in an existing wall and roof plane of a room you already have. A skywall is generally the smaller and less disruptive job of the two, and it does not change the footprint of the house.

How much does a skywall cost?

It is driven by the span, the glass specification, and how much structural work the opening needs. Replacing an existing skywall like for like is a different job from creating one where there was a solid wall, which brings in framing, headers and often a permit. We look at the structure on site before quoting, and the quote comes in writing.
